David Leigh Van As
Born and raised in Cape Town, South Africa, he graduated in 1986 with the BSc (Hons) Physiology degree from the University of Stellenbosch. In 1991, he completed the BChD Dentistry degree from the same university.
David emigrated to the United Kingdom in 2004, in order to pursue further postgraduate studies. His keen interest in oral surgery and oral medicine saw him complete the MSc Oral Surgery degree at the University of Central Lancashire (UCLan) in 2013, followed by the MSc Periodontology degree with Distinction in 2016, from the International Medical College (IMC) in Germany. David has subsequently completed the MClinDent Periodontology degree with Distinction, at the College of Medicine and Dentistry (CoMD) in Birmingham.
He currently works in four UK practices, providing periodontic and oral surgery services, in addition to lecturing at postgraduate level.
With a life-long philosophy to remain teachable, David has recently completed the MSc Craniofacial Trauma Reconstruction degree with Distinction at the Queen Mary’s University of London and has enhanced his clinical experience as an Honorary Fellow at the Oral and Maxillofacial Department of University Hospitals Dorset, in Poole. His research project demonstrated that surgical site infection rate has been halved (statistically significant) in trauma patients presenting with mandible fractures, in the presence of periodontal interventions and oral health management.
Furthermore, he is GDC registered Specialist in Periodontics and holds membership with the British Dental Association and British Society of Periodontology.
